Getting to know your Dodge ECM

By Jeb Hujelle

For those who are enthusiastic about cars or wants to learn more about them for troubleshooting in the future, it is important for you to know about Dodge ECM . Car parts and components are very complex and if one of them goes wrong or stop working properly, you have to know the root of the problem and be able to fix it properly. If you don't, you might lose a lot of money paying for repairs without having knowledge of it. One of the complex car parts is the ECM. If you were wondering what a Dodge ECM is, you went to the right place. What is a Dodge ECM? What does it stands for? What are its functions?

ECM stands for Engine Control Module. It is a device that does a lot of things. It measures the amount of fuel injection, it determines ignition timing, and it also monitors other components to keep the internal combustion engine in working condition. In short, it is responsible for controlling other components in your car in order for your vehicle to run efficiently and prevent causing problems in the future. It is a very important component in your car.

Why is the ECM important? One of its functions is to regulate the amount of fuel injection. Fuel injection is when you 'put' fuel in an internal combustion engine. Because of this, it allows the gasoline engines to do its work, that is, burn more fuel, which will result in more power during acceleration. Another function of the ECM is to adjust the ignition timing. In order to start the engine of a car, the spark combustion engine needs a spark from a spark plug to create combustion in the combustion chamber. When a problem occurs because of an early ticking of the ignition timing, the ECM detects this and delays the ignition timing to prevent further problems.

If it is the ECM that is not working, this may be the possible symptoms: one, the car is not starting, two, the car may be starting but it is not idle right, and three, when you pull the ECM out, it looks and smells like it is burnt. If you noticed these symptoms, then your ECM is really the problem. However, these are just three of the symptoms to know if your ECM is not working. Check the other signs as well for confirmation. If so, replace the item already.

To start replacing the ECM, disconnect the battery first. Locate the ECM, which is like a rectangular large chip, in the engine compartment. If the ECM is not located in the engine compartment, call your car dealership to know its location. After that, disconnect the electrical supply from the computer. Take off the screws that hold the ECM in place. Once you have done that, replace the old one with the new component. Put the screws back together and put back the electrical supply to the ECM once again. Connect the battery cables to the battery again. Start the car and wait for five minutes. If the problem is not solved, the 'check engine' light should come on.

Small car problems are like cancer cells to cars; once a problem occurs and it never gets treated, it might cause bigger problems in the future. This would make you waste time and more money. The ECM should never be taken lightly. As mentioned above, it has many functions that is why it is important. Without the ECM or if the ECM goes awry, your car would not function at its best. That would be fatal to you and your car because that would result in accidents, or even death, in the future.
